Servant Leadership

Based on the belief that leaders should be focused primarily on the growth and well being of people and the organizations and communities to which they belong, Servant Leadership emphasizes sharing power, accountability, putting the needs of others first, and helping people develop and perform as highly as possible. Embraced by many of today’s leading management gurus, including Peter Drucker, Ken Blanchard, Stephen Covey, Peter Senge, and M. Scott Peck, many highly successful companies follow Servant Leadership practices.

Servant Leadership is by no means a passing fad, even though many business executives have read the more current plethora of business books on the subject. Robert K. Greenleaf, a long-time executive with AT&T, was the original founder of the modern Servant Leadership movement back in the 1960s and ‘70s. He spent 40 years at AT&T researching management, development, and education before leaving in 1964 to found the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership.

In his original 1970 essay on the subject, Greenleaf said, “The servant-leader is servant first… Becoming a servant-leader begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first… The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and the most difficult to administer, is this: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?”
